A Stable Friendship

Rafael Seligmann writes in BILD about Germany’s solidarity with Israel in difficult times

Solidarity with Israel is a question of moral and political credibility for Chancellor Merkel. “For Germany, Israel’s security is not negotiable” Merkel stressed to the Israeli parliament. The Chancellor instigated the now regular German-Israeli government meetings, the latest of which Berlin is hosting at the moment.

Not Only Platitudes Exchanged

Being good friends, not only platitudes will be exchanged. The Israelis are disappointed that Germany did not reject Palestinian ‘Observer Status’ at the UN, but abstained. On the other hand Berlin – like the whole world – is against the expansion of Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Last Chance for Peace

Jerusalem and the moderate Palestinians around President Abbas need to reach a peaceful compromise through direct talks. If this does not happen soon, Israel’s radical enemy Hamas will gain the upper hand. It is “perhaps the last chance” for peace, the composer Daniel Barenboim tells us.

German diplomats could assume the role of honest brokers given that both sides trust Germany. And the Israelis know, that they can rely on Germany.
